Connecting the Church to it's Jewish roots

"Peace, Prophecy and Propaganda" by Daniel Nessim

We always knew that it would end this way. We are awaiting the millennial reign of the Messiah. The sword spoken of in the last times. Nation will turn against nation. The scripture is clear. People have played fast and loose with the words of God. Look at Jeremiah, during his time on the surface things looked fine but on the horizon trouble could be seen. Yeshua said (Luke 12:56), you know how to discern the weather by looking at the sky but why can you not recognise what God is doing? During Jeremiah's time some members of the ten tribes of Israel were exiled in Judah as they wanted to worship at the Temple in Jerusalem.

There were those in Jerusalem saying, "peace". Judah had a gapping wound. It was damaged and God's judgement was imminent. The people of Jerusalem were treating their wounds as minor injuries. In essence, Jeremiah said you must circumcise your hearts.

Jer 6:13 (NKJV)
“Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them,
Everyone is given to covetousness;
And from the prophet even to the priest,
Everyone deals falsely."

People were still saying things will be alright.

Daniel mentioned a mission conference in Vancouver, attended by over 30,000. It was encouraging because you could see how God was at work. Ezekiel 33:2-9 describes the blowing of the shofar was to warn of impending danger from the sword. Such as danger coming from the north later in Ezk 38.

Daniel then described two peace accords. The first was the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty signed in Washington DC on 26th March 1979 between Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, US President Jimmy Carter and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. This treaty recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The second was the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty signed between King Hussein of Jordan, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin & US President Bill Clinton on 26th October 1994. This made Jordan only the second Arab country after Egypt to normalise relations with Israel.

There are spiritual powers at work, however. Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sometimes called "a nutter", is perhaps of jewish descent! A quote of his: "Our dear imam said that the occupying regime must be wiped off the map and this was a very wise statement…" Iran is a wise and cultured society with thousands of years of history. It is not a marginal regime. New sanctions against Iran were approved last week in the US Congress. Ahmadinejad is not a fool, he knew what he was doing in quoting his imam, Ali Khameni (the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic). Muslims, you may remember, have a split between Sunni and Shia followers. The Shi'ite followers believe their imam is descended from Mohammad and therefore they should be heard. Saudi Arabia is still technically at war with Israel and yet is so afraid of Iran, that it is willing to grant access to its airspace and some landing rights to Israeli planes to conduct any operations against Iran. Israel has offered to meet Syria's President Assad anytime face to face.

Daniel had explained how this morning, his fellowship had read the story of Balak, the Moabite king from about 1200 BCE. They were able to find the story even though the scrolls have only consonants, with no vowels or paragraphs to separate the text. Balak was an interesting story, a king of authority with both power and armies. Yet Balak was afraid. He had fear and so he sent for Balaam and asks him to curse Israel. God speaks to Balaam, however, despite the fact that he was a diviner. He hears God, but tries to wriggle out of it. In Numbers 22, Moab was "exceedingly afraid" and "sick with dread because of the children of Israel" (Num 22:3). This story shows, in the case of Balaam, that some people can have a relationship with God but not serve him. Moab seeks to curse Israel. In the New Testament, James 2:19 warns us that "even the demons believe" in God "and tremble". Num 24:5 "How lovely are you tents, O Jacob! Your dwellings, O Israel!" Moab tried to curse Israel but instead brings destruction upon themselves. Balak was in dread of Israel just as Pharaoh was in Exodus 1:9 "And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we". There were more Israelites in Egypt than Egyptians! If only they were able to understand the Lord blesses those who bless Israel (Gen 12:3).

Matt 1:1 starts with the genealogy of the anointed one. Daniel mentioned that the Greek words in Matthew should have been translated not transliterated, which would have rendered them anointed one not Christ. Further examples of fearful kings include King Herod at the time of Jesus. He heard about the infant King and he was afraid and all of Jerusalem (Matt 2:3). They are afraid of an infant. Born in a lowly place. "Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also" Matt 2:8. However, bloodshed follows showing the fear of Herod. Herod goes to war against God and his Anointed One. The same can be said of the insanity of Balak fighting against God. This is Yeshua ("this is salvation" being the Hebrew meaning), the King of the Jews. Daniel said Israel is still blessed with the blessings of Balaam. Through Jesus (Yeshua) we are redeemed. In the last words of Matthew we see Jesus building his Kingdom. Person by person, heart by heart.

How have people related to Israel? Trotter & Smith wrote in 1945 about Israel's re-formation. People knew about the Holocaust but not it's extent at the time. The idea of the State of Israel was fading not growing in 1945. Isa. 14:1 "For the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will still chose Israel, and settle them in their own land." It shall come to pass to recover the remnant of Israel. John Nelson Darby taught from the 1820s that God had a plan for Israel. He knew his scriptures. Sir Henry Finch published a book in 1621 called "The World's Great Restoration". The book encouraged Jewish people to lay claim to the land. We have a first restoration of Israel to the land in unbelief. We have clear biblical truth. The Word of god say Israel exists by divine decree. In Isaiah 66:8 "Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day? Or shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion was in labor, she gave birth to her children."

Daniel explained how you can see the changes in Israel between your visits. Daniel's first visit to Israel was in the 1980s at which time it was quite simple compared to his experience of Canada, where he was then living. On his subsequent visits to Israel during the 1990s and 2000s it was clear to see what God had done with Israel.

On propaganda, much had been heard about the flotilla headed to Gaza. The Gaza Freedom Flotilla had six ships and was accompanied by a media blitz both for and against. Much was focused on the sixth ship, the MV Mavi Marmara. Little attention was given to the other five ships that Israel bordered safely. The sixth ship saw a confrontation and the Israeli Navy were meet with resistance in the form of iron bars and knives from a "hardcore group" of 40 of the 590 passengers. Daniel said that according to matthew 24 we should expect more of these accounts. False reports were signified. Yeshua also said that false messiahs will appear, and not to believe them. When the Son of Man appears in heaven, the world will mourn. Jews will weep and mourn as well. The world will then have lost their armies. Tragic days are coming for the world. We should expect a contorted media. We should engage and write to our leaders so that it might go well for us (as per advice in Jeremiah 29:7).

Herod feared the Annointed One.

Daniel concluded with some remarks about various political figures involved in the Middle East peace process. He described Tony Blair as "misled" and that he was "uncertain" about Barak Obama. However, the fig tree is blooming!

Matt. 24:32-35
“Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."
